Inspiring the Next Generation: Hands-On Brickwork Experience at Dixon’s Unity Academy

Our Brickwork Division recently had the pleasure of visiting Dixon’s Unity Academy in Wortley, Leeds, where we delivered an engaging, hands-on experience designed to introduce students to the world of construction and skilled trades.

As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting education and developing future talent, the day focused on giving students a real taste of bricklaying. Under the guidance of our experienced team, students rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in- learning practical skills, understanding the importance of precision, and experiencing the satisfaction of building something from the ground up.

A First Project to Be Proud Of

The highlight of the day? The students successfully built their very own BBQ- an impressive first project that will remain long after they’ve left school. Not only did this give them a tangible sense of achievement, but it also demonstrated the lasting impact of quality craftsmanship.

Projects like this are invaluable in helping young people see the possibilities within the construction industry. For many, it was their first time considering a career in brickwork or related trades- and we hope it won’t be their last.

Supporting Skills Through Social Value Initiatives

This initiative was made possible through our involvement in a wider social value programme, delivered in partnership with the Northern Yorkshire team at Morgan Sindall Group plc as part of the Middlecross Care Home project for Leeds City Council. Collaborations like this are key to creating meaningful opportunities for local communities and ensuring that major projects leave a positive legacy beyond construction.
