Delivering Glass Reinforced Concrete for Huddersfield’s “Our Cultural Heart”
Project Overview
Henley Stone Specialists has completed the Glass Reinforced Concrete (GRC) façade package for the first phase of Our Cultural Heart, Kirklees Council’s flagship regeneration scheme in Huddersfield.
Working with BAM Construction, Henley delivered the specialist GRC package as part of the transformation of the former 1970s market building into a new food hall and community library hub, connected by a new public square.
The project is a major part of Huddersfield town centre’s wider regeneration and a significant local scheme for Henley Stone Specialists, headquartered in West Yorkshire.

Henley Stone Specialists delivered the GRC façade package, including:
- Design and technical coordination with BAM Construction and the wider project team alongside Smart Crosby International
- Coordination of GRC manufacture and delivery- Supplier BCM GRC LTD
- Specialist installation of the GRC façade elements
- Associated stainless Steel Bracketry Supplied by HZS Stainless Steel and Installed by our expert team
- Management of interfaces between the GRC system and surrounding construction
- Site coordination and delivery within a complex town-centre regeneration project
Specialist GRC Façade Delivery
The GRC elements form an important part of the architectural treatment of the redeveloped building, providing the design flexibility required to create distinctive façade features while remaining lightweight and durable.
GRC was particularly suited to the refurbishment of the existing structure, offering a significantly lower structural load than traditional precast concrete while allowing the architectural intent to be achieved.
